Now note that ownCloud does a LOT more than any other solution - none have things like server to server sharing or external storage or apps. If you don't believe me about the relative size of the developer communities, have a look at, for example, and compare to some others. Check also - there is more to performance than syncing 10.000 small 1-byte files and the fact that ownCloud is used by some very serious people means it is optimized for real life situations. In the open section, much more is scheduled to go in in 8.1 or, if they don't make it, 8.2. If you don't believe me about the performance stuff (facts matter, right?), just look at some of these: This release is coming next quarter and if I might give a cautious guestimation: It'll be twice as fast at least in most situations. Performance-wise, I think it is important to note that while ownCloud 8 is already quite a bit better than previous releases, 8.1 development has a specific focus on performance and the speedups already attained are already VERY big. Outside of broken installations, with the number of users and developers oC has (easily several orders of magnitude more than any other open source file sync and share) such issues are found and fixed relatively quick. That is, if it's a decent installation - I never had any issues on my install (yeah, anecdote is not data) but I know some online providers (ahum ownCube) use a crippled version of ownCloud that manages to crew with the client. Not impossible, but you can find race conditions with any other solution as easy if not easier. Issues with reliability of ownCloud are pretty old news - I really think you'd have a hard time loosing any data with ownCloud 8.0.2. TL DR: What is the most stable "Dropbox"-like solution to sync a large collection of assorted files with my Synology NAS? Do they still have these problems or have they been solved? Would you recommend them for my use case? Do you have other suggestions? Also, although it has a pretty interesting set of features, I'm only interested in the "Dropbox"-like side of it, I don't need all of its bells and whistles.īut I've been having trouble finding up-to-date opinions on both of these. OwnCloud I've never used, but I've heard both good and bad things about it - the bad mostly deal with the fact that it can be slow and apparently it is not very reliable with a rather large collection of files. They were photos of a family dinner, that unfortunately I will never be able to get back. By the time I took notice (by sheer luck, since it never gave any signal or warning of errors), even the previous versions of them were ruined. By that time, I discovered that it messed up the synchronization of some photos I took with my phone (before I had the time to organize them and back them up), making them incomplete and corrupted files, which it then propagated through all my devices. I started using it almost since it came out, and I used it to sync folders on 3PCs and 2 smartphones with eachother until about a year ago (before I had the Synology). I wanted to know what is the best software (as in, most stable) to sync a large collection of assorted files with my Synology DS213J NAS (docs, photos, music, videos, ebooks - standard ones and pretty large PDF textbooks - the filesize varies a lot). Hi everyone! I've been a lurker for some time, and I think this might be the place to get a proper opinion on this - but if you think I should post this somewhere else, let me know - Reddit is far too big ahah
